Sporting events

‘Il Borgo dei Borghi’ on Rai 3 is about to return and we cannot miss it! Representing Tuscany is Mugello with Scarperia and San Piero. If we will manage to keep the sceptre of the ‘Most beautiful village in Italy’ we will find out together with the new saga ‘Mugellandia 2025’

Mugellandia Chapter 1: San Piero a Sieve, Via degli Dei, Convento Bosco ai Frati, Fortezza Medicea di San Martino

San Piero a Sieve
Founded in the 11th century on the river Sieve, along which the only road connecting Florence and Bologna ran. Its history is linked to Cosimo I de Medici, and we will discover why, and to the nearby Scarperia with which it shares the institution of the single municipality.

Convent Bosco ai Frati
Founded by the Ubaldini before the year 1000, it is one of the oldest convents in Tuscany. It was donated to St Francis of Assisi, who made it an important Franciscan monastery. In 1420, the church and convent were rebuilt to a design by Michelozzi at the behest of Cosimo de' Medici. Many precious gifts were left by the Medici, including the crucifix attributed to Donatello and preserved in the small museum of sacred art attached to the convent, which we will visit.

Medici Fortress of San Martino
Commissioned by Cosimo I in 1569 to defend Florence from possible invasions from the north, with its 65,000 square metres it is one of the largest fortresses in Europe, surrounded by imposing walls designed by Bernardo Buontalenti. Today it is privately owned but one can walk around the walls enjoying a splendid blend of history and nature.

Way of the Gods
A 130 km route that crosses the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines: from Piazza Maggiore in Bologna to Piazza della Signoria in Florence. We will travel several sections of it to reach the Fortezza, the Convent and return to San Piero.

WHAT WE WILL DO
The experience will begin at the famous Forno Conti, an ideal place to have a hearty packed lunch prepared. We will set off towards the imposing Fortress of San Martino, whose incredible history we will recount, continue towards the Monastery where a very interesting guided tour of the Museum awaits us, and then return to San Piero a Sieve from the Via degli Dei.
