We can reach the lovely hamlet of Castagno d’Andrea (in the municipality of San Godenzo), which was the birthplace of the great Renaissance painter Andrea del Castagno, from both the Muraglione Pass, or the Valico della Croce a Mori (in the municipality of Londa).
In this uncontaminated environment, among the hundred year old chestnut and impressive beech woods, it is possible to come across rare and protected plant species, a rich underbrush, and numerous deer: for example roe and fallow. Wolves have also been sighted, and the eagle has returned to inhabit the area.
Excursions in the park are possible all through the year and can be made in the company of nature guides. The suggested sites include:
The summit of Falterona, the Arno River springs, the archaeological area of Lago degli Idoli, the Acqua Cheta valley with the suggestive falls described in Dante’s Inferno, canto XVI, and the crests of Mounts Acuto, Falco and Levane are but a few points of interest.
In winter, the snow allows for wonderful skiing expeditions, both cross-country and downhill, while on the northern part of Mount Acuto you can mountain climb near the frozen falls.
