The LIPU Mugello Bird of Prey Rescue Centre is located at Località Ponte a Vicchio and is one of the main Tuscan facilities for the rescue and rehabilitation of wild birds. It covers about one hectare of land and hosts ten aviaries for birds of prey and large birds, as well as spaces for smaller species.
The site also includes a prefabricated structure with enclosures, cages, storage areas, and the equipment needed for first aid, recovery, and the rearing of nestlings. Each year, between 250 and 300 birds of prey arrive here, along with numerous chicks that have fallen from their nests and animals seized by the authorities. It is not a zoo, but a true hospital for wild animals, where the ultimate goal is always the release of rehabilitated individuals. The most common guests include tawny owls, barn owls, little owls, buzzards, goshawks, and occasionally eagles.
The main mission is to heal, rehabilitate, and return each animal to the wild, respecting its natural behavioural needs. The work of the volunteers intensifies during the spring and summer months, a critical period for nestlings. Many are found by citizens in gardens, parks, or along roads and are brought to the centre for assistance.
Here they are fed, weaned, and prepared for life in the wild before release.
The facility also carries out environmental education activities, involving schools and visitors in educational and awareness-raising initiatives. The centre works closely with veterinarians, public authorities, and other associations to ensure the highest standard of care. Each intervention aims to reduce stress and maintain the animals’ natural wariness of humans.
Management is entrusted to LIPU, which coordinates volunteers and financial resources to cover expenses. Public support is essential, both through donations and volunteer work.
Staff remind people of the importance of not taking young animals unless they are in real danger, to avoid unnecessary separation from their parents.
Throughout the year, public release events are organised—emotional moments that testify to the success of the rescue efforts. The centre is a point of reference for the whole Mugello area and the province of Florence. Every bird of prey that takes to the sky again is a small victory for biodiversity.
The LIPU Centre in Vicchio is, therefore, a place of hope, where injured nature is given the chance to be reborn.
