Performing MTV Unplugged In New York means immersing oneself in a surprisingly intimate and informal setting: the enthusiastic murmur of the audience, the band’s casual chatter between songs, the sound of instruments being tuned on the spot, and even the occasional curse word.
Nirvana chose to appear live on air without playing songs that a mainstream audience would easily recognize. MTV Unplugged In New York represents the peak of the approach that Nirvana had already embraced before—using high-visibility opportunities to promote bands that would otherwise remain unknown to most people.
