Celebrating the 700th anniversary of the founding of Vicchio
Vicchio celebrates seven centuries of foundation. And it does so with solemn celebrations.
On Sunday, 27 October, people will go back in time to 1324: ‘In the said year and month of October, the Commune of Florence began to make a new land in Mugello... and it was named Vico’.
For the 700th anniversary of the founding, the historic centre, from Piazza Giotto to Piazza della Vittoria, will be immersed in the medieval atmosphere. A historical re-enactment will re-enact scenes of life, characters and trades of the time. The highlight, in the first part of the celebration day, will be the parade of the Florentine historical procession, the flag-wavers, the match of the old glories of the Florentine Historical Football and the medieval lunch.
SATURDAY 26 OCTOBER:
- 4 p.m.: Inauguration of the ceramic theme panel by Cristiana Vitartali and Alice Gori, under the loggias in Piazza della Vittoria. Opening performances by Misia and Dario Cecchini;
- From 4 p.m. under the loggias of Piazza della Vittoria: creative workshop for everyone, ‘Create your own peasant dress: make your own dress and take part in the parade’, organised by Elena Barbugli Az. Agr. L'Oasi
- 5 p.m. , Teatro Giotto: First of four conversations between history and archaeology Vicchio Terra Nuova del Mugello, on the occasion of the 700 years since the refounding of the centre (1324-2024), by Prof. Paolo Pirillo ‘1324. The refounding of the town: antagonists and strategies’.
SUNDAY 27 OCTOBER:
- 10:00 a.m.: Meeting with speeches by the authorities in Piazza Giotto
- 11:00 a.m.: Departure of the Florentine historical procession, with parade through the historical centre to the Simone Margheri sports ground;
- 11:30 a.m.: Arrival at the sports field: salute to the Voice and performance by the Florence flag-wavers
- 12:00: Start of the match of the Old Glories of Historical Florentine Football;
- 1:00 pm: Medieval lunch at the skating rink (organised by Pro Loco).
- 5:00 p.m.: Giotto Theatre, Presentation of the restoration work on the Bridge in Vicchio and inauguration. Speakers: Arch. Mario Lopomo and Prof. Giuseppina Carla Romby, Ing. Carlo Lardani. This will be followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the bridge and an aperitif offered by ‘La casa del prosciutto’.
