Loc. Gattaia – Comune Vicchio nel Mugello (FI)
Stories of collaboration, of network and resistance, of solidarity between partisans and local people. Unlucky stories of those who have unjustly paid for reckless decisions and to open the way for our current freedom. Even that of the "Beppa", the widow of the toll, and who gave his name also to the tollbooth 50 of the station of Fornello on the Railway Line of Faentina, is a story along the path on Mount Gattaia of resistance and attachment to their home and life. GoticaLaVia offers a ring route, starting from the center of Vicchio to discover the Valley of Muccione, Monte Gattaia, the partisans who hid there and the railway and tollbooth 50, which marked the history of this remote corner of Tuscany.
In the locality of Gattaia the plaque commemorating the liberation of Vicchio occurred on 6 March 1944 and recalls the battle sustained by the partisans of the area who joined those of Monte Giovi.
Of these areas were also the innocent peasants just 21 years old who were shot by the fascists on 22 March 1944 in Campo di Marte (Florence) by a platoon composed precisely of those young people who for fear of retaliation had finally enlisted with the fascists.
The raid was made to intimidate the local population after a fascist raid on March 12 to destroy the Mugello partisan movement failed, thanks to a blizzard.
