At the Spazio Brizzolari, a solo exhibition by a Florentine painter born in 1938: forty works, twenty years of research, and a light that does not fall from above, but emerges from within. Exhibition curated by Emanuela Degan. There is a light that does not illuminate things from the outside, but inhabits them from within. This is the discovery awaiting visitors to the Spazio Brizzolari Museum in Scarperia and San Piero, where on Saturday, May 2nd at 5:00 pm, "Light Does Not Fall From Above" opens, a solo exhibition by Simoè, a Florentine artist born in 1938. With approximately forty works created over the course of twenty years, the exhibition offers a dense and coherent overview of a pictorial research that has never sought aesthetic gratification, but necessity. For Simoè, painting is not a profession: it is an existential act, a way of being in the world. Simoè's work is distinguished by a strong physical and sensorial component. His canvases, constructed through dense layers and spatula interventions, shape a language that transcends representation to enter the dimension of feeling. It's not about seeing an image, but about being traversed by an energy. "Painting is not surface but experience, gesture, presence. Each work is an open space in which the viewer is called upon to find their own emotional connection." Archetypal signs and forms recur throughout the exhibition: arches, vortices, the sea, nocturnal urban visions. These elements are not decorative, but symbolic, thresholds of passage, condensers of energy, mirrors of interiority. Each painting offers no answers, but raises questions, leaving the viewer free to interpret. Simoè's biography is itself a journey of layers. A career punctuated by experiences in Florence, Paris, the French Riviera, and Casentino, each of which has left its mark on his gaze and technique. Yet, beyond the places and the years, his painting maintains an unmistakable voice: that of someone who paints because he can't help it.
The exhibition is open until May 17, 2026.
