For over 500 years, a representative of the State has always been present in Scarperia, with among their duties the task of organizing and preserving public records. Thanks to the endless chain of notaries, chancellors, and officials, the Archive of the Vicariate of Mugello has survived to the present day. However, although the Archive as a whole is in good condition, over the centuries some documents—individual items—have not withstood the test of time, remaining damaged, sometimes to such an extent that they can no longer be consulted in order to prevent further deterioration.
For many years, through consistent dedication, an important recovery effort has been carried out by restoring damaged documents. Restoration allows a community to reclaim its cultural heritage, bringing it back to life and increasing its resistance to the passage of time. It is a complex process that must take many factors into account, and it is the result of in-depth studies—still evolving—that combine the humanities with the sciences.
Sixty years after the Florence flood, which severely affected the national archival heritage but also spurred innovation in the field of restoration, the Scarperia Archive presents an exhibition of its damaged and restored materials. This exhibition offers a behind-the-scenes look at archival work, encouraging visitors to view documents from a different perspective—one focused on protection, preservation, and carrying tradition into the future. The exhibition is curated by the Municipal Library of Scarperia and Pro Loco Scarperia, with the patronage of the Municipality of Scarperia e San Piero.
The exhibition will be inaugurated on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at 4:30 PM at the Palazzo dei Vicari of Scarperia.
The exhibition will be open to visitors until June 21, 2026, during the following hours:
Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and holidays: 10:00 AM–1:00 PM / 2:30 PM–6:30 PM (closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays).
