The main trekking ring runs along a section of the Apennines crest (Monte Citerna – Monte Falco, linked with GEA), the watershed between the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic domains, and the ridge that separates the basins of Mugello and Florence – Prato and the Val Bisenzio (Monte Giovi, Croci Pass at Calenzano, Calvana). It is characterized by easy trails and enchanting views that highlight the typical Apennines landscape in which barren peaks and depressions intermingle with stretches of beech, chestnut and oak woods that cover the mountain slopes. Excursionists will find an abundance of natural settings – rich with both flora and fauna – and frequent sightings of deer, roe deer, wild boar and mouflons. The geological layout is also very interesting and includes the open presence of stratified arenaceous rock (Formazione Marnoso Arenacea) in extensive outcrops.
