Pontassieve was born in a pre Etruscan period at the confluence of the river Sieve and the Arno. Some recoveries witness the Etruscan and Roman rule; it was the residence of various Lords from Filicaia. At the end of the year 1300 they had a bridge built on the river Sieve and they granted a license for a market since the village was on the cross roads of the Casentino, Arezzo and Romagna.
In 1555 Cosimo I had the bridge rebuilt appending the Medici coat-of-arms on the side. The development of the town started in 1859 with the construction of the railway Milan-Rome-Naples which crossed Pontassieve.
