Beato Angelico - Vicchio

Ignazio Hugford, The Holy Family and Saints, a detail with Santa Maria Maddalena de' Pazzi

The Beato Angelico Museum was born from an end: that of the sharecropping world, a way of life that had characterised the Mugello territory for centuries.

In the 1960s, the abandonment of houses caused that of many churches: no longer places of worship and, therefore, of adequate protection of the sacred art preserved within them. Hence the need for a Museum. Of sacred art and popular religiosity because paintings and liturgical furnishings were intertwined over time with the religious life of a community.

The museum aimed to enhance the individual ‘beauty’ of the objects on display while highlighting their relationship with the local culture as a whole: in the logic of the ‘Museo Diffuso’, which considers the themes dealt with in the rooms and showcases as invitations to rediscover and explore them in the reality of the territory.
The very dedication to Fra Angelico is emblematic, especially if centred, rather than on the fortuitousness of his birth in Vicchio, on the profound sense of his style: of popular nobility and complex simplicity.

The tour opens with a sort of ‘index’ that anticipates the themes dealt with in the following spaces: from the multiple and diversified presence of the ‘sign of the cross’ (precious crosses and crosses that stood on sheaves of wheat) to the long time of the sacred (Etruscan and 18th-19th century votive offerings), from the recovery and restoration of stolen works to sculptures that recall popular devotion as much as aesthetic quality (bust by Andrea della Robbia).

The parish churches were important for the history and also the social organisation of the Mugello territory: a map reconstructs their distribution while paintings and liturgical furnishings are organised by homogeneity of origin. Especially noteworthy are an amphiphonary, various chalices and monstrances, an Annunciation by Furini and the Holy Family by Hugford.

Pilgrimages and processions confirmed the presence of the sacred in the territory: a blow-up evokes the atmosphere, clarified and enriched by the tabernacles of Campestri and Rupecanina and by the signs of the presence of the Compagnie (hoods, registers of members).

In the Mugello socio-religious panorama, there are numerous works linked to illustrious patrons, including but not limited to the Medici. The sacristy environment has been reconstructed in Room 6: sacred vestments and candelabra are displayed inside original furniture once found in sacristies.

The tour ends in a space in which the works are arranged alluding to their original location: at the beginning a baptismal font and a 13th-century bell, at the sides altars (one dedicated to the Marian cult) with different furnishings and paintings: among them the Virgin with Saints and Prophets by the Master of Montefoscoli.
