The Wine
Mugello has never been without vineyards. During the Renaissance - in the historical reconstruction by Zeffiro Ciuffoletti – Mugello wines were well thought of, more than Tuscan products that are today considered "excellent" wines throughout the world. For roughly a decade, from the year 2000, Mugello wine has been regaining the reputation it once had and that had been lost through the centuries by revealing qualities that seemed inaccessible and which have surprised public and critics alike. The character of the wine surprised even those "pioneers" who had invested in the territory by restoring vineyards and cellars. Obviously technical development in agriculture and wine growing has played an important role in the rebirth of Mugello vineyards; to this we must add the passion and the willingness to take risks that certain farm estates have shown. We are talking, in particular, of traditional vines such as Sangiovese, Malvasia and Trebbiano, to which have been added Merlot, Rebo and Pinot nero (among the red wines), and Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Riesling, Traminer, Muller Thurgau and Petit Manseng (among the white wines). There is certainly a sense of satisfaction, and finally these quality wines are able to hold their own with the numerous other products for which Mugello is renowned. And finally, official recognition has also been granted: in the past few years some of these vineyards have received excellent ratings in some of the countries most important wine guides.
Aziendas and wines in Mugello
Not everyone is aware of the fact that in Mugello, on the sunnier hillsides, grape vines are being grown again. The meticulous choice of new vines or the recovery of old vineyards, the careful control of the grapes at every phase of growth, the scrupulous choice of the bunches, the work in the cellars, and the aging in oak barrels under the strict direction of wine experts has made the production of pleasant, full bodied wines with intense fruity bouquets and a full harmonious aroma possible.
