Marradi, located near the border with the Emilia Romagna region, was under the control of Faenza and the Counts of Guidi during the Middle Ages up through the 14th century when Florence took control. During the reign of the Medici family, various beautiful Renaissance palaces were built in Marradi which can still be admired today. Many famous people were born in Marradi, among them the well-known poet Dino Campana, who lived during the turn of the 19th century.

The "Marrone del Mugello"

Marradi is famous for its marroni, a type of edible chestnut that is flavorful and larger than other chestnuts. Found across the Mugello, the Marrone del Mugello I.G.P. is protected and recognized as one of the best chestnuts in Italy. Every year in October Marradi hosts the traditional Sagra delle Castagne, or Festival of the Chestnuts, where this special local product is celebrated and prepared in many different types of dishes.
