The SO.F.T. springs of Florence trekking excursion system

Travelling around the Mugello basin, you can walk for days and days, tracing an enormous ring.

The peaks on the foothills of the Apennines are strung together by sinuous trails that cross through the major watersheds tethering the entire ring of mountains to create a vast amphitheatre around Florence.

The trying geological history has given the landscape both the “soft” contours of the Tuscan hillside and the ruggedness of the steep mountain passes, the gorges and rocks of the Upper Apennines. Moving along the excursion ring that traces the Mugello crests and the hills of the Sieve Valley, some of the most enchanting finds are probably the rocks themselves, the lofty heights, the deep incisions etched on the sides of the river banks that run downhill towards Tuscany and the Padana valley.

The “Sorgenti di Firenze” (SO.F.T.) trails, which characterize the Mugello excursion system, underline exactly how deeply rooted Florence is in this valley, and is aimed at providing new ways for tourists to travel in harmony with nature and to rediscover the deeper natural and historical values of these mountains.

The “Le Sorgenti di Firenze” (SO.F.T.) trekking includes a system of trails that make up a great main ring called “I crinali del Mugello” (the Mugello crests), and 22 secondary rings which stem from it.
